Molt in Neotropical Birds: Life History and Aging Criteria PDF. This volume was conceptualized initially as a means for organizing notes from the field and sharing information among researchers and technicians at the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project (BDFFP), near Manaus, Brazil.

Molt In Neotropical Birds Life History And Aging Criteria PDF
We started with little information on the molt sequences of the species involved, so we began by applying a well-developed framework of understanding molt patterns from temperate species. After capturing and collecting data from thousands of birds, and taking thousands of photos, a new understanding of the more common species emerged, which was broadened over the years as we added depth and understanding with more and more species.
The resulting volume is a compilation of that work in which we have combined our field experience with specimen reviews and a thorough literature review of the more than 180 focal species detailed here. To help fill a void in our collective understanding of Neotropical bird molt, we are pleased to contribute our research to date on this topic, realizing that much work remains to be done.
To document the molt patterns of the 4000-plus species in the Neotropics will take decades and an army of knowledgeable and skilled banders. We hope that this volume will serve as a helpful step toward that goal.
Many of the broader concepts of molt pro-cesses and the cycle code system have been vet-ted by volunteers and trainees at the Louisiana Bird Observatory, a program of the Baton Rouge Audubon Society. Volunteer and other support of that program have been critical for solidifying the cycle code system of aging birds. In particu-lar, Daniel A. Mooney has been a leader in that program and we are grateful for his time and energy spent organizing and coordinating band-ing operations.
We also humbly recognize that this work would not have been possible without the many researchers that have led the way in understanding this once poorly understood aspect of avian life histories. Their collective research and efforts publishing their findings have paved the way toward a more holistic and comprehensive understanding of bird molt. This volume would not be possible if not for the inspirational works created by these talented researchers.
