Small Animal Internal Medicine for Veterinary Technicians and Nurses. The idea behind this textbook is to provide a resource for the veterinary technician in the area of small animal internal medicine.
Small Animal Internal Medicine for Veterinary Technicians and Nurses
It is obviously inspired by Drs. Feldman and Ettinger ’ s Textbook of Veterinary Internal Medicine , and I hope that it is received as the complement it was intended to be. The definition of internal medicine is extremely broad, and as such, this text cannot possibly encompass all aspects we wished to cover. This textbook is divided into body systems and therefore some overlap of material naturally occurs in this format.
I have also included chapters on selected aspects of neurology and cardiology as some of these areas, at times, are intimately related. Some subjects in internal medicine have not been included in this textbook, either due to page constraints or choice. I hope the subjects selected and contained in this text provide the veterinary technician with the information needed, but any suggestions for improving this text are gladly welcomed.
The scope of practice for the veterinary technician is continually evolving. This is especially true as veterinary technicians have progressed to becoming veterinary technician specialists. Lacking formal pathways to specialization, many veterinary technicians are striving to increase knowledge in their area of interest. Some may question why this degree of information is being presented to the technician.
It is because I am a firm believer that learning is a lifelong process. Enhancing the technician ’ s knowledge base in internal medicine can lead to improved patient care, increased anticipation of the needs of our patients and of our doctors, and advance our ability to provide clients with timely, accurate information on their pets.
The many individuals that contributed to this book by their selfless devotion of time, experience, and knowledge have been invaluable. The diplomats who contributed to this book, both editors and authors, have demonstrated not only their passion and knowledge but also their support of the profession of veterinary technology and of the specialization of veterinary technicians. Th e veterinary technician specialists who contributed to this book, both as editors and authors, continually amaze me with their strength, compassion, and thirst for knowledge. A special thank you is owed to all contributors for supporting me in my efforts as a first – time editor.
