Manual of Canine and Feline Gastroenterology 3rd Edition
We have invited many of the up and coming GI specialists as authors to provide a current perspective and to reflect the growing numbers of specialists working in private (non-academic) referral practices. Whilst the Manual is biased towards diseases seen in the UK, exotic diseases are mentioned, not only because pet travel and climate change may alter their geographical distribution, but also because Manual wishes to make its Manuals relevant to practitioners worldwide. T
here is extensive cross-reference to other relevant Manuals (i.e. Manual of Canine and Feline Abdominal Surgery; Manual of Canine and Feline Dentistry and Oral Surgery; Manual of Canine and Feline Endoscopy and Endosurgery; Manual of Canine and Feline Head, Neck and Thoracic Surgery;Â Manual of Canine and Feline Oncology), where some specific diseases or techniques are detailed. All drug dose rates are cross-referenced to the Small Animal Formulary. The Manual is divided into four sections. The first section starts with the critical role of history taking and physical examination, and then the generic techniques of clinical pathology, imaging and biopsy are discussed and beautifully illustrated.
The second section features twenty succinct chapters on the diagnostic approach to, and differential diagnoses for presenting complaints/problems affecting the GI tract, pancreas and liver, providing the busy practitioner with a practical approach. Although specific treatment regimens are covered in the final section, the third section deals with the rationale behind the treatments available for GI, pancreatic and liver disease.
This includes not only antimicrobials, parasiticides and drugs for symptomatically managing vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation, but also a crucial chapter on fluid and nutritional therapy, including non-pharmacological methods of manipulating the microbiome. The final section discusses specific conditions of organs of the GI tract (from mouth to rectum, the pancreas and the hepatobiliary system), describing their pathophysiology and clinical signs, their diagnosis, their treatment and their prognosis.
