Introduction to Animal and Veterinary Anatomy and Physiology 4th Edition

A sound knowledge of anatomy and physiology is an essential basis for the effective clinical treatment of companion animals and farm animals alike. The fourth edition of this bestselling book continues to provide a comprehensive description of the anatomy and physiology of dogs and cats.

The book Introduction to Animal and Veterinary Anatomy and Physiology 4th Edition builds on these foundations with detailed descriptions of exotic small species including birds, and domestic farm animals, including cows, sheep and pigs, as well as the horse. The text:

  • Contains detailed descriptions of the systematic anatomy and physiology of a wide range of animal species
  • Covers clinical conditions and disease examples related to the individual body systems
  • Includes applied anatomy tips that relate theory to clinical practice
  • Is written by expert authors with a wealth of veterinary, animal science and teaching experience
  • Includes more clinical application examples and question and answer tests to reinforce student learning
  • Has been updated with more information for animal science students

This text provides an essential basis for all those embarking upon a veterinary, animal science or animal management career.

An understanding of anatomy and physiology is the basis of working with any species of animal and it does not matter whether you are dealing with a cat, a dog, a horse, an alpaca, a pheasant or a lizard you must understand how they ‘work’. This is the fourth edition of what has now become the standard text-book on anatomy and physiology for veterinary nurses and those of you who are familiar with previous editions may notice that the title has changed to include ‘animals’.

This should indicate that the book is relevant to all those students who are studying on any course with any sort of animal in the title or in the modules, such as equine science, agriculture or game keeping. I hope that those ‘new’ students will find the text useful in their studies of anatomy and physiology and will realise that the book is not just for vets or vet nurses.

Finally, with the addition of colour I hope that the figures are now easier to interpret. In particular, the histological photo-graphs used to illustrate the basic tissues in Chapter 2 should make interpretation clearer. Histology can be a difficult subject and an understanding of the underlying structures is important.
