FETAL MACERATION IN BUFFALO CASE REPORT

HISTORY:

FETAL MACERATION IN BUFFALO CASE REPORT , A graded murrah buffalo was brought to TVCC  with history of purulent discharge from vagina. Buffalo was pregnant for sixth time during fifth lactation period. AI was done 23days ago by a quack.

INTRODUCTION:

Death of fertilized ovum or early embryo due to bacterial viral other disease or any other abnormality. May occur at any stage of pregnancy. Mostly embryo is not observed. Fetus died like threads of tissue. CL regressed. It stays in uterus and starts getting putrefied. This is due to infection present in uterus or may introduced from outside.

RISK FACTORS:

Different breeds may be the risk factor like Surti breed , jaffarabadi breed , murrah breed. Risk of reoccurance is 25-30%.

INCIDENCE AND IMPORTANCE:

It occur after 3 and 8 months of pregnancy .Incidence is less than 2-3%. Occurrence of disease in buffalo is 0.5-1.5%. Its an uncommon condition that occur in buffalo with loss of fetuses.

CAUSES:

•  Bacterial cause: Campylobacteriosis , Trichomoniasis and listeriosis
•  malnutrition
•  immunocompromised animal
•  Poor management practices

CLINICAL SIGNS:

• Intermittent purulent discharge
• Visible mucous membrane was pink and moist
• Foul smelling vaginal discharge
• Temp pulse increased

DIAGNOSIS:

• RECTAL EXAMINATION:
• Dissimilar horns
• Thickend uterine wall
• Fluid filled uterus
• Presence of bony fragments
• Aspiration of uterine contents revealed presence of purulent material in uterus

• VAGINAL EXAMINATION:
• Dilatation of cervix
• Cupious purulent discharge
• Presence of foul smelling fetid lochia

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS:

• Fetal maceration can be differentiated from fetal mummification
• As fetal mummification is shrinkage of fetus by absorbing all fluids of fetus and uterus.
• Also mummification occur in sterile environment.

TREATMENT:

• First of all when cervix is open then through gradual traction fetus can be removed.
• If cervix is contracted then injections of
• STILBESTEROLE OR E2 is given upto 4-7days
