Case Studies in Veterinary Immunology

by Laurel J. Gershwin

This book was inspired by Raif Geha and Luigi Notarangelo’s excellent clinical guide to human immunological

Case studies in veterinary immunologydiseases, Case Studies in Immunology: A Clinical Companion, also published by Garland Science. It was developed as a resource for students of veterinary immunology, who sometimes struggle with the clinical relevance of complex immunological mechanisms, and my hope is that it will serve as a valuable supplement and companion to a variety of immunology textbooks and courses. It should also be very useful to residents preparing for board examinations, to graduate veterinarians, and to anyone with an interest in comparative immunology.

The book is arranged according to mechanisms of disease causation, and includes cases of both primary and secondary immunodeficiency, auto-immunity, and those that can be classified as one or more of the four types of hypersensitivity reaction described by Gell and Coombs. Each case includes a workup, a list of differential diagnoses, pertinent diagnostic laboratory data, and treatment options.

Comparative medicine considerations at the end of each case engage with the similarities and differences that occur among different species with the same or similar medical conditions, including humans. End-of-case questions and answers for student assessment, and a list of further reading for those who wish to delve deeper into the literature, have also been included. Appendices that describe common vaccination protocols for domestic animal species, as well as some of the more common diagnostic tests performed in a clinical immunology laboratory, serve as a helpful clinical reference.

Case Studies in Veterinary Immunology contains cases drawn from a wide variety of species—canine, feline, equine, bovine, and avian. I am deeply indebted to the 10 contributing authors, whose veterinary expertise in particular animals and medical conditions has enhanced the breadth of this book.
